Inside bar setup explained: mother bar, trigger and stop
The Gatilho Markets team · 28 October 2026 · 4 min read · How we write
In short
- The inside bar's full range, wicks included, sits within the mother bar.
- Choose one stop version on paper: mother bar or inside bar.
- Inside bars on small timeframes appear constantly and mean little.
The inside bar is the simplest pattern to define with no room for opinion: one candle whose whole range, high to low, fits inside the candle before it. That precision is what makes it a good first setup to write down and test.
The two candles
- The mother bar is the larger candle.
- The inside bar is the next candle, with a lower high and a higher low than the mother bar.
Together they describe a market that has stopped expanding for a moment. Which way it expands next is not something the pattern tells you; the context and the trigger do the work.
The card
| Line | Rule |
|---|---|
| Context | Daily or H4 trend, so the setup only trades in its direction |
| Pattern | Inside bar fully within the mother bar, wicks included |
| Trigger | A break of the mother bar's high (buy) or low (sell), confirmed by a close |
| Stop | The opposite end of the mother bar, or the inside bar's end for a tighter version |
| Target | 2R, or the next swing level |
| Skip | Mother bar more than twice the recent average range, or a major release due in the next hour |
Two stop choices exist, and the card must name one. The mother-bar stop is wider and survives more noise; the inside-bar stop is tighter and is hit more often. Decide on paper, not live.
Worked example
EURUSD, daily, trend up. Mother bar: high 1.0920, low 1.0830 (90 pips). Inside bar: high 1.0895, low 1.0848. The next day closes at 1.0928, above the mother bar's high.
| Version | Stop | Distance | Size for $90 risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mother-bar stop | 1.0828 | 100 pips | 90 ÷ (100 × 10) = 0.09 lot |
| Inside-bar stop | 1.0846 | 82 pips | 90 ÷ (82 × 10) = 0.10 lot |
Entry 1.0928 in both cases; a 2R target would be 1.1128 and 1.1092.
Illustrative calculation, not an expectation of results.
Notice how little the size changes on a daily chart: the stops are wide either way. Run your own numbers in the lot size calculator and check the target in the risk-reward calculator.
Pitfalls
- Inside bars in the middle of nowhere. Far from any level, the break often fades. Inside bars at a retest of a broken level are a cleaner variant of the breakout and retest.
- Wick breaks. A wick above the mother bar that closes back inside is closer to a false breakout than a trigger.
- Small timeframes. On M5, inside bars appear constantly and mean little.
Write the version you prefer, then backtest it before trading. Trading involves risk, and most retail traders lose money.
Questions people also ask
What exactly is an inside bar?
A candle with a lower high and a higher low than the candle before it, the mother bar.
Which stop is better?
Neither by default. The wider mother-bar stop survives more noise; the tighter one is hit more often. A backtest tells you which suits your card.
Which timeframe works best?
Many traders prefer H4 and daily charts, where inside bars are rarer and easier to judge.
